Dipping in Minneapolis, paru à l’automne 2002, réunit les deux albums de Minneapolis et Minneapolis We Insist ! en un coffret auquel s’ajoute un troisième disque, Minneapolis Tour Guide, ultime pierre à l’édifice offrant dix nouvelles plages inédites entrecoupées de bribes de conversation avec Michel Portal (qui chantonne et exprime son plaisir…).

Au menu deux somptueuses versions « live » de "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat", poignante ballade signée Charles Mingus que sublime la sombre et tortueuse clarinette basse de Portal, et trois variations autour d’"Ornette", pièce chantante poétiquement présentée par son auteur comme « un chant d’amour qui n’en finirait pas », trois autres thèmes saisis à vif sur la scène de Tourcoing et, sommets de l’album, deux « incunables » puisés dans le reliquat des séances d’août 2000 qui feront le bonheur des inconditionnels de Vernon Reid qui s’y révèle royal : l’obsédant "Rolling in Minneapolis", 22 minutes de groove touffu qui ne sont pas sans rappeler le funk décalé et allumé du Miles Davis des années 70, et "The Loon Tune", où Portal, armé de son bandonéon, vocalise à la manière des chanteurs soufis du Pakistan sur un fond rythmique naviguant entre tango et funk. Deux morceaux d’anthologie !
